CCTLD's How To Register and Use
Country code top-level domains are easily identified as they all feature only two characters after the ‘.’. Country level domains are created and further delegated by IANA - Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. Every country on earth has its own cctld.
Country code domains are either open to everyone in the world to register through their assigned registrars, or are closed to country nationals. Every country runs their cctld through a trustee organization. In Canada for example the .ca cctld is overseen and administered by CIRA - Canadian Internet Registration Authority. Rules for registering cctld’s differ for each country and may include a local presence requirement. Fees and term lengths etc also vary between each country and registrar.
Country code domains have steadily grown and some like .uk and .de can boast millions of registrations. Some countries have few if any domains registered for a host of reasons.
Usage of cctld’s has been expanded by domain speculators and website operators looking for something different than the normal .com, .net, .org, .biz, and .info options. Country level domains are being used in variety of ways including as domain hacks – i.e. del.icio.us or blo.gs, or for their alternate meanings for the extension. These alternate meanings include, .fm for radio stations, and .ws for website. A full list of these are included below.
